Professor Aldis has written to the Premier enclosing a copy of his agreement and stating, " I am advised that the fact of tho agreement between myself and the Government of New Zealand gives me a claim to the intervention of the Government, and I accordingly ask you, as a matter of justice to myself, and also to the whole colony, to be pleased to institute an inquiry into tho treatment which I have received from the Council of the Auckland University College." To this a lettor dated January 24th, hns been returned, signed by Mr Alex Willis, Secretary to the Cabinet, stating that "ThoGovernment declines to accept any responsibility under the agreement referred to, which provides that you shall become a Professor of the College, and be subject to tho control of the governing body. The Premier understands that you have always recognised the University Council as the authority under whose direction you were, as provided by the Auckland College Act, 1882, and that if the Council has duly terminated your engagement by giving the required notice, "that is a sufficient answer. I am to add that under no circumstances can tho Government be regarded as having acted in the matter in any other capacity than as agents for the College." Professor Aldis, replying under date January 30th, states : " 1 am unable to acquiosce in the refusal of the Covornment to accept any responsibility respecting that agreement."
