THE INQUEST,

An inquest was held this afternoon at Gleeson's Hotel, before Dr. Philson, coroner, and a jury of six, touching the circumstances surrounding the death of Charles Augustus Slater, whose body was picked up "jo the harbour yesterday afternoon. Serpeanb Macky represented the police. Peter Annan gave evidence re finding the body. He did noo know deceased. Constable Sbanyers, of the Water Police, de§osed to removing the body to the morgue, [c examined the clothing, but found nothing. Mr Sergeanb, of the Blue Post Dining Rooms, stated that Slater had been living ab his boarding - house from the Bbb May np to Sunday last. JETenry Sergeant, son of the last witness, deposed thab he lasb saw deceased pn Sunday evening ab eighb o'clock in the Blue Posb rooms. Slater said he was going for a stroll down the wharf and would be back at a quarter to lO.o'cloek. The jury returned a verdict of "Found drowned and there is no evidence to show |»ow deceased got into the water."
