SAD OCCURRENCE.

GIRL BURNED TO DEATH.

An inquest was proceeding afc the Hospital when we went to press before Dr. Philson, coroner, to inquire into the cause of the death of a girl named VVilhemima Kopsoh. The deceased was a niece of Air Kronsfeldt, resided with her parents in Wyn-yard-street and was between 11 and 12 yeara of age. Yesterday afternoon her mother went on a visit to Ponsonby and left the girl in charge of the servant. Th» child seems to have been getting some hot water out of a kettle at the stove when her clothing took fire. She ran into the yard and her screams were heard by Mr Carr, grocer of Princes-street, who was in the next, house. Mr Carr promptly jumped the fence, and with commendable promptitude seized a sheet from the line, wrapped it round the child, and succeeded in extinguishing the flames. Unfortunately, however, the girl was badly burned aboub her body. Mr Carr also sustained some injuries as he fell when getting over the fence and cut his face. He also got his hands burned when fighting the flames. Medical assistance was promptly obtained, but owing to the serious injuries sustained it was deemed expedient to remove the girl to the Hospital. Death, however, took place early this morning.
