CONCERT AT THE OPERA HOUSE.
There was a largo gathering ab the Opera House last evening, on the occasion of Mr S. Adams' annual concerb which, on the whole, must be regarded as a pronounced success, and highly complimentary to the promoter. Mr Adams haa undoubtedly made hie mark as a teacher of young people in instrumental music, both orchestral and solo itoma being played with a degree of perfection rarely met with at performances of thiß character. Mr S. Adams wielded the baton, and had hia forces under perfect control, the orchestral items generally being played with confidence, and with a duo appreciation of the subject treated. lhe ; most successful of the orchestral numbers was Suppe's "Poet and Peasant, and nexb in order must be placed a selection from the "Bohemian (*irl" (Balfe), each of which was deserving of high praise. The other orchestral numbers were a concerb piece •• Pas de Fascination " (Nilseen) and St. Quentin's waltz "Stories,' ateo well played. Of fehe solo items contributed by pupils, the most finished performance, was the violin eolo " Martha," played by Miss F. Cook, who poßseßseß true artistic taste and manipulates her bow with great skill for one so young. Miss E Whitelaw, who is also a very yonng lady, distinguished hereelf by leading an orchestra of thirty-five instruments in faultless style, and also played with Mr Adams a duet for piano and violin (a) Adagio (Mozart), and (b), Allegro (Beethoven). This was by no means a showy performance, bub proved that the young violinisb in capable of treating of really difficult music, aa contrasted with the popular selections usually chosen for debutantes. The audience were particularly chaimed by two really olever perform-ancea-a violin solo. " Air Vane (Farmer,, played by Master Gerald Ralph, and piano Kkl "Andante" (Beethoven), by Miss Muriel Whitson. Both are fiercely youthful performers, bub they acSted themselves wonderfully well, and were each honoured wxth a by papUaP Mr T Adams played a cornet Sof-ftthof x^:,™z*»gs* Scarf," and ••Gallants of *»£»*,*£ items being well received. The p«»£ a companimenta were played by wr o Adams, Miss E. Harris, and Miss J. JMc Lean. On the whole the concerb was a greab success. __
