RETIREMENT OF MR W. C. SMITH,
Danevirke, this day,
Mr YV. C. Smith addressed the olectorsof Waipawa at Danovirko Town Hall on Monday night. He epoko at longth in support of tho legislation introduced last session by the Ministry, but tho greater parb of the time was devoted to replying to Mr Carlile, of Woodvillo, ono of the candidates for the seat, who has published letters attacking Mr Smith in connection with native lands. He (Mr Smith) intimated that, in consequonce of failing health, ho would not contest) any soat for the new Parliament. A voto of thanks for past services, and regret at his enforced retirement, waa passed by acclamation. A motion was also passed that the action of Messrs Smith and Cadman, in connection with the TJmutaoroa block, bad been beneficial to the district.
