ATTEMPTED MURDER OF A WIFE.

Brisbane, Wednesday, A woman known aa Emily Emmerson, bu* whoHo real name was Etnily Woodward' was shot this morning by hor husband) George Henry Woodward, of Samson'a Vale, near Brisbane, at the Commercial Hotel, Roma, whore the torrner was staying pending taking a situation as a domestic on a station. Woodward arrivod at Roma by this morning's train from Brisbane, and had breakfast at the hotol, where he met his wife. After an altercation ho ehot her with a revolver whilo sho was washing her face preparatory to seeking a constable to givn him in charge. A messenger was sent for medical aid, and on the arrival of Dr. L'Estrange ho took the revolver from Woodward and handed him over to the police. The unfortunate woman was found lying on the floor of the kitchen, the bullet having passed through the baso of her skull from right to left, the wound bleoding profusely. An hour after she recovered consciousness, when her dying depositions were taken. Sho is not expoctod to recover, as her jaw is broken and the baso of her skull probably fractured. Woodward arimits that he shot her, and came up for that) purpose. He is about 60 years of age, while she is aboub 30 or 36. From what he says it appoars that) jealousy was the rnotivo of the crime. Sho holds a protection order signed by the police magistrate of South Brisbane, and allegos persecution on his part.
