ANGLICAN SYNOD.

MEETING AT WELLINGTON.

(BT TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

Wellington, this day. The annual session of the Wellington Diocesan Synod opened this afternoon. Archdeacon Fancourt presided. In his address ho regretted the retirement of Bishop Hadfield and the intended resignation of the Bishop of Waiapu. Referring to the former, he expressed surprise thab no information was to hand in reply to a letter of delegation sent in June last to the Archbishop of York and Bishop of Durham, respecting a Bishop for Wellington. He hoped thab no abtempb would be made this session to bring about chaDge in the Acts or resolution? by fresh legislation. He referred at length to the large increase in population in tho district, and the attempt of the Church to keep hold of her people. He said there were two things which crippled her efforts, viz., means, and a wanb of men. If the Church was to thrive as she should, she musb have an indigenous ministry, in full sympathy with her people and faith. He added that if the ministry is to be one of power it must have its ranks recruited from time to time by the sons of leading citizens. Culture waa needed equally with learning in the clergy.
