THE BIRKENHEAD ROAD.

(To the Editor.) Sin,—Tho road which was formed by voluntary labour some three ivoekp a^jo, upon tho slip which blocked thu approach to the borough of Birkenhead, has through tho gross noifligenoe of the Borough (Jouncil been allowed to get into such a dangerous state that carters have been compelled to cease using it. Ali heavy goods have now to be landed at the Norfchcoto Wharf, thereby entailing double chargos for cartage, etc. Now, this certainly could and should have been avoided if tho Council had tuken a common Benao view of the situation and fascined tho road immediately after it wasforraed. Tho whole cost of tho four chains would not have been more than about £15, and instead of the frightful bog and utterly impassable road we should have ono capable of carrying tho heaviest traffic. It is * wbiapered thai) the councillors havo nob been in accord in regard to carrying out tlva necessary work in connection with the slip. Some are desirous of obtaining Government aid, and havo been working in that direction, with scant hops of realising anything for their labour. In the meantime the people suffer for the wanb of the road. I would remind, the

Council they have no right to let the ratepayers suffer through their bickerings, v bhere are such. It is all very well to obtain Governmonb aid if possible to improve bhe road at some future date, but what we want is a road capable of carrying the ordinary traffic now, and this we must have without loss of time. It was with this understanding the inhabitants .so heartily responded to the call of the Council. If the Council desire to retain bhe confidence of the ratepayers they will at once spend bhe paltry sum of £15 and thereby remove the reproach under which they at present rest.—l am, etc., Practical.
