The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the City Schools Committee was held in the Wellesley-Btroob school last ovoning, when there wero present, Messrs Blades (chairmnii), lfarrell, Crowe, I-Suniß, Walker, MeArthur, Fairs and Adams.

Wkllesley-street School.—Mr Dickinson reported that at the annual examination the following results had been obtained : — Presented, Sb'4 ; absent, 26 ; excepted, 61 ; failed, 103; and passed 490. The percentage of passes wao SOS, and of failures 17.3. The percentage on class subjects was SO. The inspector reported that Standard VII. bad been instructed with Standard VI. Very satisfactory progress had been made and was being continued in the Primer classes. The work as a whole was very satisfactory and gavo evidence of painstaking and intelligent; teaching, The only division in which any marked weakness had been shown was Standard V. Tho stato of that class was very unsatisfactory ; tone and discipline wero poor ; and the work was of a very inferior character. There was rather a high percentage of failures in Standard IV. girls. Much of the work of the class, however, was good ; those that pasted had done so easily and those that tailed liad shown weakness in two or more subjects, Seven of the pupils who had failed in Standard VI. were under the age of 13. The fnculties of few children at this ago were sufficiently i developed to grasp the work prescribed for the standard! Ho recommended, (1) that mental arithmetic should recoivo more attention, and (2) that the necessary appartus should be provided for making tho instruction in elementary science observational and experimental. The tone, order and discipline of the school wero good. The Chairman said this was a very full report, and the best one they had received. It also gave the best explanation. i] r Farrell thought that it was very satisfactory to get a detailed report. Although tho failures in some of the standards had been great yet he considered tho children had shown a certain aptitude for their work. Patronage.—The Committee granted its patronage to a performance ot "Cinderella " by tho Devonport School.
