THE BIRKENHEAD SLIP.

Wellington, this day. To day, in accordance with the instructions of the Premier, Mr Wit-heford saw Mr Blow, Under-Secretary for Public Works, and with him visited Mr Hales, Marino Engineer. After inspection of plans of tho proposed rubble ombankmont, which tho Harbour Board has proposed should bo constructed to provide space for material from the slip, and to ' prevent the harbour at that point being silted up, tho Engineer expressed approval 01 the work suggested. The ostimatod co^t of tho Wall, based on Messrs Stewart and Taylor's estimates is £1,165. The Department now only require a locality plan showing tho part of the harbour affected by the proposed work, and a special roport from their J_nginear in Auckland, before they decide what steps will bo taken. Mr Witheford expresses much pleasure at tho help he has had from Auckland members. From tho a tiude of the Premier it seems probable that substantial aid will be given.
