THE GILBERT ISLANDS.

The Loongana, which arrived at Sydney on the 16th inst. from the Gilberts, has brought word of a murder committed there by a native, his father being the victim. As the group is now under the British protectorate, the offender will probably be dealt with by Sir John Thurston, who has gone to the Gilberts in H.M.s. Rapid. A British Resident is to be appointed. The Loongana reports the arrival in the islands of a strange barque loaded wilh Chinese. She called at Butari tari and lefb suddenly, her lines being cut away in her haste to clear. The American missionary Bteamer Hiram Bingham was in the Gilberts when the barque lefb for Sydney. From inquiries made on board the Loongana it appears that the natives and bhe Europeans continue to speak well of the good done by Captain Davis, of H.M.s.
