THE ANNUAL REPORT.

The following is the annual reporb of bho retiring Committee of bho Newton Schools district to bo presented to the annual meeting of householders on Monday evening next : — Coin mittee.—Ab bho annual meeting of householders held April 25th, 1892, Messrs J. M. White, G. Knight, T. McMaster, W. J. Macdermobb, H. Thompson, J. D. Cow, T. 11. Marbyn, A. Williams, and T. W. Freeman wore elocted a Comittee for tho year now closed. Fourteen Commibbee meetings have boen held, the attendance of members being as follows:—J. M. White, 14: G. Knight, 11 ; T. McMaster, 12 ; \V. J. Macdormott, 10 ; H. Thompson, 12; J. D. Gow, 10; T. H. Marbyn, 14 ; A Williams, 8 ; T. W. Freeman, 12. Proposed New School.—Thab in accordance with tho resolution passed ab tho lasb annual meebing of householders, leaving the selection of the site for bhe proposed now school wibh tho Committee to do thoir besb for bho residents of the Eden Terrace district, your Committee recommended the Board of Education to secure Mr Mettam's site, which is a portion of tho Grammar School reserve and the best nvailablo adapted for school purposes. After some correspondence between the Board and bho Committoe on the subjocb had taken place, the Committee wore informed thab tho Board had deferred tho matter of further accommodation for the present. Closing Pitta.\ td Edwin Streets School. -That on September 30th, 1802, the Board terminated tho occupancy of tho Pitb and Edwin streets {Primitive Methodist) school, which had been used since August, > 1384, < as an infant branch school in connection with the Newton East school, tho children being transferred to ono of the rooms in the ISlewton East school buildings. As a consequence, tho infant department is overcrowded, and a roqusab from bhe Committee for increased accommodation is now uudor the consideration of the Board.

Number of I'upils on the Suhoolßollw. —The number of pupils on tho rolls of both schools are:—l Newton East, 666 ; Newton West, 607 ; total, 1,273 : with an averago attendance of—Newton Easb, 590 ; Nowbon West, 516 ; total, 1,106. The statistics of attendance at the public schools show thab bhe Newton Easb school has bhe lowest average of absentees, Newton West school being third on tha lieb of lowesb percenbago of absentees. Public School Examinations. — Both schools have been well represented ab tho various examinations held during the year. Ab the junior districb scholarship examination, scholarships were awarded to bwo pupils of bhe Newton East School and one pupil of the Newton West school. At bbc first grade drawing examination of bhe pubiie schools, held under the auspices of the Society of Arts, pass certificates wore awarded to 27 pupils of the Newton Easb School, and sixteen nupilsof the Newton West School. Frod'orick Sinclair, a pupil of bhe Newbon Easb School, was bhe successful candidabo oub of fifty competitors for the Rawlings scholarship. Robert N. Anderson, pupil of the Newton West School, was awarded the prize for tho best drawing ab the drawing examination of the public schools held under the auspices of tbe Society of Arts. The examination of the schools in Standards took placo_ in August last, Newbon East School being examined by Inspector John S. Goodwin, and Newton West by Inspector Jas. U Dickinson. , Improvements. — The Commibbee have had bhe cobbage ab bhe corner of Brisbanestreot removed, thus enlarging the playground on the girls' side, and have provided further shelter accommodation for the pupils of tho school ab Newton West, ihe approvements now being effected by the cutting down of the Great North Road ad cross streets have necessitated the buildin. 0 f a retaining wall along the whole of" the school frontage and a portion of the sides of the school property, and, as authorised by bhe Board, tie Committee accepted tho tender of Mr Roberb Crellin for a two-feet concrete wai) to be topped by an iron fence, at a cost o £237 ss, to be defrayed by the Board of Education.
