NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held lasb nighb. There were present: Mr S. C. Brown (Mayor), and Crs. English, Donald, Webley.MeMaster, Porter, and Shackelford.

Sussex-street.—Mr A. J. Jarretfc called attention to the stabe of the foofcpabh in Sussex-sbreeb (opposite St. Peter's Church), stating that ib is vvaterworn and full of holes.---On bbc motion of Cr. Webley it was agreed bo do the necessary work bo tho street. Old.Mill Road.—A letter was read from the Auckland Town Clerk drawing attention to that portion of the public road between Jaggar and Parker's tannery and the brick bouse- ab tho old mill. He said it was stated to be ii) very bad repair and almost dangerous, and asked that tho matter have the Council's attention.—lt was resolved to reply that the work of repairing the road will be attended to. Meat Inspection.—Mr P. A. Philips, Town Clerk, wrote stating that bhe City Council are considering the desirability of employing an expert to inspect all meat used for food within the ciby and adjoining disbriebs, afc an expenditure of ab least £200 per annum, and requesting the Newton Council to meet a conference to be hereafter arranged on the subject, with a view to a mutual understanding.—The_ Mayor said this was a matter bhe Council could cordially supporb. He moved thab a reply be sent fco the effecb, "Thab tbe Newton Borough Council will be willing to send a representative tc any conference held."— This was carried. Water Consumption.— The Town Clerk reported that the consumption of water for the week ending April 10th was 107,000 gallons, and for the week ending April 17th was 100,000 trallons. Finance. — Accounts to the amount of £118 ls 4d were passed for payment. Of this amount £95 was progress payment on behaif of the Great North Road contract. Road Repairing. — Tho Mayor suggested thab bhe main road, from the bottom .of the present New North Road contract to the top of tho Old Mill Road, should be gone ovor. Ho moved thab the matter be referred to tiie Streets Committee, with power to acb. The suggestion was pub to the Council in the form of a resolution and carried. New North Road.—ln connection with this contraat the Mayor said he thought a resolution should be passed by the Council smpowering the Town Clerk to have metal waste laid on the footpaths of bhe New North Road, and on tho various sido streets as soon as possible. It was resolved that fche work be dene as soon as tho work of formation had been passed by tho engineer. Rosft Road.—lb was resolved that the footpath in front of Mr Rowles' property in Roso Road- be cub back bo bhe proper boundary bo enable him to erecb a fence. New North Road.—A resolution was passed instructing the Town Clerk to notify property owners on the New North Road, whose verandah post 3 obstructed the footpath, that they must be removed back to the propor boundary. Rate.— The Mayor gave nofcico of motion in accordance wibh the Act that afc the nexb meeting he would move " Thab a rate tif Is in the £ be struck on all rateable property in the borough." He said the estimated expenditure for next year was £1,042. , , Bylaws.—The Major stated that the committee appointed at the lasb meebing bad gone bhrough bhe by-laws of the Borough. They had resolved to recommend tho passing of a by-law dealing wibh the depasturing of cattle; fcne dealing wibh footpaths and crossings, and tho repeal of a by-law relating to cattle. He gave notice -jf motion thab the quosbion of tho by-laws would be considered aba special meeting of the Council on tho lab May next.
