Whakgarei, January 11. The fruit crop this year is noi) nearly bo large as last, early peaches and plums especially being very short. The later kinds of peacheß are more plentiful, bub the recent N.E. gales have reduced them considerably. Tho weather for the past fortnight has been very bad for farmers who have their hay down, and we are sorry to say there are va»ny in this predicament. The heavy downpour of rain last week caught a great many, and the weather up till now has been so changeable that many have not yet gob their crops cub for hay. The monthly meeting of the Charitable Aid Board was held to-day, and the ordinary routine business was transacted. The firsb meeting of the newly-formed Harbour Board wa3 held on Wednesday, when Mr A. H. Mason was unanimously elected Chairman, and Mr J. McKinnon Secretary and Treasurer. It was resolved to invite applications to fulfil the duties of Harbour Master, etc. The missing girl Taylor has not yet been found. Tho County Council have applied to Government for a grant of £100 for construction of road to Ngunguru coalfield, at present impassable for wheel traffic. They have received a reply from the Minister of Public Works, to the effect thab it has been referred to the SurveyorGeneral. As there is a considerable area of Crown Land in this locality, there is every prospect of the application being granted. The monthly meeting of the Whangarei County Council was held yesterday, and a large amount of business was got through. Accounts amounting to £200 were passed for paymenb, and the dog tax for the ensuing year was levied. Tenders for road works amounting to £300 were accepted. The following are the successful tenderers : —No. 1, Hikurangi-Wairua: Cobtle and Christie, ditching, £17 9s ; pipe clay, 2s 3d per yard; fascines, 30b per 100. No. 2, Hikurangi-Wairua : G. L. Kerr, ditching, £23 10s; metal, 5s 6d per yard. No 1 Ruakaka: W. H. Taylor, £58. No. 1, Marsden Point: McDonald and McKay, £26 ss. No. 1, Waipu Gorge: D. McGregor, £5 8s 6d. No. 1. WhangareiKamo: H. Cheeseman, metal, 5s 3d per yard; gravel, 5s 3d per yard ; clearing and! levelling, 3s per chain. No. 2, Whan-garei-Maunu : M. W. Armstrong, metq,l, 5s 6d per yard ; gravel, 4s per yard. No. 1. Whananake: T. Cleming, £19 10s. No, 2, Whananaka.; E. Brothers, elabs, £J s per 100.
