CITY COUNCIL.

The first meeting of the City Council since the holidays was held lasb night, when there wore present:—The Mayor (Mr W. Crowther), Crs. Paberson, Hewson, Layers, Courtney, Wright, Swales, Dignan, Luks, Atkin, Holland, Grey, Farrell, Trenwitb, Warren, Garrabt, Glover. Harbour Board Representatives.— The Secretary of the Harbour Board noti. fied the necessity of returning four members to represent the city. It wardecided to hold tba usual meeting for eloction on the second Monday in February. Water Works.—E. HadriU wrote ofiering to coat tho boiler domes at the Western Springe with his patent composition. It was agreed tha>. the work be done at a cost not to exceed £14. Benefit.—Lachlan McGowan wrote asking (he patronage of the Council for his bonalit.—The application waa granted. Subsidy.—The Commissioner of Taxes notified payment of £337 10s subsidy to the credit of the Council. Lease Wanted. — George Wilkinson wrote offering to lease an allotment in Karangahape Road, north side, near the Fire Brigado Station.—The application was referred to ths Endowments Committee. Signboard. — James Prince asked for permission to retain a signboard on his premises against the building regulations. —Cr. Garratt moved that the letter be referred to the Streets Committee. The Mayor said this question of signboards was becoming a serions matter. Cr. Wright Eaid that it seemed to him thab if a man wanted a sign all he had to do was to ereob a sign, and then work bis friends in the Council to geb it allowed to remain. He moved, " That unless the signboard ba removed, legal proceedings be taken." This was seconded by Cr. Courtney.—Cr. Garratt'e motion was adopted after some discussion, during which reference was made to many other signboards that were contrary to the building regulations.

Cemetery Road.—The clerk fco the Waitemata County Council wrote, asking the Council to aid in the cost of repairing the road from the Whau. Bridge to the Waikomiti Railway Station.—The letter vraa referred to the Legal Committee, Petition.—Cr. Garrabt presented a petition from residents and ratepayers in the South East side of the Old Norbb Road, from Newton Road to Nixon-street, and west side of Newton Road fco Manning. Btreet, asking thab the footpaths be tarred j nnd sanded.—The petition wae referred to the Streets Committee. Visitors to the Art Gallery.—The Town Clerk reported that durin» the six holidays when the Art Gallery and Free Library were open, there was an average daily attendance ab the former of 256 persons, and at the Library of 344. Library Rate—The Mayor gave notice that a library rate of Jd in the £ would be Btruck. Arthur-street.— Cr. Swales moved, That the Engineer be instructed fco have I*9 channel at the north end of ArthurBtreet, P.onsonby ward, laid with concrete £ order to carry oil the house drainage." ■Jno motion was adopted, tha work to be uons by the ward workmen. Lighting the CiTr.-Cr.
