DROPPED DEAD.

SUDDEN DEATH OF MR J. MUMFORD.

A shockingly sudden death occurred yesterday afternoon on the Domain Cricket Ground, Mr Jonathan Mumford, the wellknown cricketer, expiring most unexpectedly from heat apoplexy whilat playing a gams of cricket.

Mr Mumford, who was in his usual good health when proceeding to the cricket ground, was playing in a scratch match of the Veteran Crickeb Club on tho Domain ground yesterday afternoon, and was at the wickets with Mr A E. Whitakor. At four o'clock the score stood at 40, Mr Mumford having contributed 20 of the runs. Mr Whitaker struck a ball, which he thought good for a 6core, and he beckoned to Mr Mumford co run. Mr Mumford raised his righb hand and called " No," and immediately fell to the ground. It was at first thought that be was only faint, but ib weis Boon discovered that something far worse wa9 the matter. Dr. Walker, who waß preaenb, oxamined Mr Mumford as he lay on the ground, and found him totally unconscious and pulseless. He gave about a dozen gaspa and expired. Dr. Walker pronounced the cause of. death to be heat apoplexy, and gave a certificate to that affect. The body was removed to the residence of the caretaker of the criekeb ground, whence it was removed to the deceased's residence in Symonds-streeb. , Mr Mumford was & man in the full vigour of life, 52 years of age, and usually active, being an old and enthusiastic cricketer. He was married but had no children. He resided iti Syrnonds-street, and had a place of businßSS, where he dealt mostly in cricketing materials, in High-street. Mr Mumford was well known in local musical as well as in cricketing circles, and was a member of the Choral Society, treasurer of. the Amateur Opera Gliib, one of the members of fche Committee of the Orchestral Union, and a member of the choir of St. Matthew's Church. He was much liked, and his sudden death came as a great shock to many. The funeral of the deceased took place thia afternoon at Purewa Cemetery, tbo interment being private. Tho Key. L. H. OuDram conducted the burial service.
