A POPULAR VICTORY.
It is needless to say that Sb. Hippo's brilliant victory in the New Zealand Cup has been the talk of the hour this week, ami Mr L. D. Nathan, the popular owner of tho colb, has had showers of congratulation on his deserved success. St. Hippo's performance stamps him as a thiee-year-old of the first water, and puts the wins achieved by Manton in 1888 and Tirailleur In 1889 quite in the shade. All doubts about St. Lcger's stock being non-stayers ia now casb to the winds, for St. Hippo stayed out the journey like a racehorse, and in splendid time, ton, for the two miles were compassed in 3min 30|siec. Tho downfall of St. Hippo in the Dolby ab the hands of Stepniak was a revere blow to his owner, but I think it wns solely duo to the severe race the colt ran in tho Cup on the day previous. Ib is too much to nek a thrco-year-old to run two big races on successive days, and so Mr Sttad must have thought, or else he would nevor have withdrawn Stepniak from the Now Zealand Cup. The pair will, no donbt, have the opportunity of fighting their battles over again in the Great Northern Derby run ab Ellerslie on New Year's Day. and the question may ihen be settled which is the better of tho pair. Such a liberal and popular sportsman «3 Mr L. D. Nathan is to be congratulated on owning such a great colt as St. Hippo, ana ho also has the satisfaction of havinc v half-shore in his sire St. Leger who promisee to top the list of winning (ires in how Zealand this season.
