WAIKATO NOTES
(BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Hamilton, this .day. Colonel Goring is up here on volunteer matters. He has been visiting Hunbly, where ib is.proposed to raise a Volunbeer Company, and preliminary steps having been taken, in bhis direcbion. At no place in the province should there be a bebber. show of getting together a a first-class company than at Hunbly, where a large number of young active fellows are at work, -together with a sprink-. ling of bid veterans. If bhe Hunbly. men make up their minds to go in for volunteering, the resulb will be a good company, as they dp most things thoroughly there when once started.
The agitation against granting a license ab Otorohanga for. an.hotel is assuming large proportions. I understand that bhe opponents to granting of-the license have engaged legal assistance to protest) againsb the opening of a licensed houso. The Rev. Mr Gittos was at Otorohanga oh Monday laßb to interview Wahanui and other chiefs, asking them to protest, against the license, 1 but they refused, as they consider a licensed house absolubely- necessary, for,the accommodation, of ..Europeans travelling through the counbry. They also think that a licensed house would to a great extent stop the sty grog-selling now being carried on to a great extent, which does far more harm bhan the open drinking. It is -; pretty certain that the license will be granted in spite of all opposition. The best men, both Europeans and Maoris, living up there, being greatly in favour of.it., ■..'■■ .:■■;;' ~; :'; ':.,.:.''..'. '":
