THE LITTLE BARRIER.
DIFFICULTIES IN THE WAY OF PURCHASE. ,
(by telegraph.-—special correspondent.)
Wellington, this day. In the course of conversation with Mr Cadman to-day, he told me he had just received a wire from the settlers of Kaipara,- giving him the names of certain people who are going to tho Little Barrier to cub timber. The Minister says many people appear to imagine that judgment having' been given on the question of title, there is nothing to preventtho Government going ahead and purchasing the island out of hand. They forget that the law allows three months'grace for. applications for re-hearings. In this case, directly judgment had been given and sub-divisions arranged for, the Government had applications to buy the island. They intimated their willingness to do so, provided all the interested parties signed an agreement enabling tbo purchase to be completed, but would nob pay money to a Ciajoriby of the owners while a few 6tood out, as litigation might then ensue and the fruits of the purchase be lost. In any caso, a partial purchase could not be contemplated. The Government wanted the wholo ieland, and would not buy merely a parb. It is now found that some of bho natives interested won't sell, and are treating with Europeans for the sale of the portion with standing- timber. A proclamation appeared in the " Gazette," informing the public, and the island is under negotiations for purchase by the Government. Possibly legislation may havo to be passed in tho coming session to enable the Governmenb to acquire the island, but it is hoped no -j such steps may be rendered necessary.
