TEACHERS' SALARIES.
The question 01 salaries paid to teacherswas discussed ab tbo meeting of the Educational institute on Saturday afternoon. Ib arose out of a motion by Mr Scott, thatti uniform scale of salaries for teachers in the colony bo adopted. He mentioned thab in Taranaki the average per teacher amounted to £59, in Southland £119, and Auckland £75. This included pupil toachers and all concerned. In Taranaki there had been a reduction of 45 per cent. He considered that where a teacher was doing the sama work and had the same qualifications, ha should received the same remuneration. The system was a national one, and there should be a common remuneration throughout the colony. The strict average affected their salaries, particularly those of country teachers. What he wanted to secure was to ensure the affirmation of the principle of uniform salaries throughout the colony. Mr R. Stewart seconded the motion, and said he advocated ib over five years ago. Tbo teacher had not the power to offer his services to the highest bidder becauso the State had crushed out all private opposition.
Mr Burlinson contended that ib was jusb, bub doubted whether it would be a gain, a3 ab present the teachers could put the pay in one province against another.
The motion was adopted
