ANNUAL REPORT
The annual roporb of the Auckland City District Schools Committee hns beon prepared by Mr J. Blades (Chairman). This will be read ab the meeting of householders in St. James's Hall on Monday nighb, 25th April. The following is a copy of the report:—
" Your Committee have great pleasure in submitting an account of thoir work for the past year. Ab the annual meoting of householders held on the 27th day of April, 1891, Messrs A. E. Glover, J. Blades, R. Farrell, W. J. Speight, R. Crowe, J. Tudehope, and Dr. Walker were elected a committee for the then ensuing year. The Committee have held 23 meetings during the yoar. Tho attendance of each member is shown on the table attached. Householders will remember that in the report of the outgoing Committee for last year, it was stated that the then Committee had under consideration the question of payment of quarter money levied for the purpose of defraying the cost of school materials, etc , supplied to the pupils of yourschools.and that this question would be one of the iirsb for the consideration of the incoming Committee. Your Commibtee.immediately upon taking ofiice, applied themselves to this question, which had been referred by the Board of Education to them for a report thereon, and after going very carefully into all the details of information obtained from various sources your Committee's first recommendation, viz., 'That the Board of Education repeal Regulation No. 66 and provide the necessary materials in the same manner as school furniture and appliances are now supplied,' was adopted by the Board, and the result has been the abolition of the quarter-money impost. The building in Chapel-street, known as the Chapel-street school, was in course of erection when your Committee took office. It was opened in September last.and is a great improvement, upon the building so long occupied in Albertstreet. Ab the end of last year your Committee drew the Board's attention bo tine necessity of Wellesley-streeb and Nelsonstreet schools being thoroughly renovated throughout, which your Committoe have to acknowledge the Board heartily acquiesced in. The work was carried out during the Christmas holidays. Tho whole of the school grounds were also tarred awd sanded. Tho Truant Officer still continues to keep up a very good average attendance ab your schools, but still the Committee musb urge upon parents the necessity of seeing bhab " bheir children are sent regularly and punctually to school. Favourable results cannot be expected if children are irregular. Headmasters' reports aroabtached showing the work of their respective schools during the past year. The Inspectors' reports on the Standard examinations of your schools show fair progress: — Wellesley-street: Percentage of passes, 53; failures, 17-2. BeresfordPtreet: Passes, 47"8; failures, 17"6. Napier-street: Passes, 44; failures, 122. Nelson-sbreot: Passes, 471; failures, 13-5. Albert-street : Passes, 28-2; failures, 16' L Your Committee record with pleasure the harmonious relations that have existed with the Board during the past year. The roll number of pupils for the year ending March 31eb, was" 2,994 ; and the average attendance, 2,530, as against 2,895 and 2,442 respectively for bhe previous twelve months showing an increase in both roll number and attendance. Statement of accounts attached shows the Committee's receipts to have been £668 11s lid, expenditure£ss22s sd, leaving a balance of £116 9a 6d on the Slab March last."
