Wellington, this day. The Synod met ab three p.m. yesterday. FUNERAL REFORM. Mr E. E. C. Quick (Dunedin) presented tho reporb of the Select Committee on fun.oral reform, which recommended the adoption of the following resolution: "Thab this Synod observes with satisfaction thab there is in many places a growing tendency towards greater simplicity in funerals, and urges upon clergy and Christian pooplo yenerally the importance of using their influence in that direction." CHURCH ME.MBERSIfrp. On the motion of the Rev. C. M. Nelson (Auckland) a select committee was set up to consider and report upon the desirableness of making some more adequate provision for the periodical revising of the lists of registered members of the church. THE READING OF THE LORD'S PRAYER IN SCHOOLS. The Bishop of Auckland moved, "That the Synod do adopt the recommendation of the Diocesan Synod of Auckland, namely, that the General Synod do memorialise the Houses of Legislature thab provision be made in tho Education Act for the daily recital of .the Lord's Prayer by the children of the public schools." Sir John Hall seconded the motion. The Bishop of Cbristchurch was sorry to oppose the motion, but ho must oppose it as inexpedient. The question must be remitted to the Diocesan Synods, and from them a policy mast be gathered. They had truly said the bishops ought to have a policy, but they had not one as yet. What they wanted was a distinctive policy, and until they were preparod with that they should leb the matter alone. The Bishop of Dunodin heartily concurred with what had fallen from Bishop Julius. Archdeacon Mules movod as an amendmeat, "That a select committee be appointed to draw up a petition to the Legislature upon the subject of religious education, which shall combino tho mothods most suitable to the wants of tho various dioceses of this province." After considerable discussion, both motion and amendment were withdrawn. bishop selwyn's resignation. J. Richardson Selwyn of his oOice as missionary bishop of tho Molanesian Islands. The motion, which was seconded by Mr E. E. C. Quick (Dunedin), was carried unanimously. The Synod rose at 5.45. TRUST PROPERTIES. The Synod resumed at half-past 3even, and went into committee to consider the interim report of the Committee on tho reports of trustees of prooerty under the General Synod. Tho reporb was adopted with verbal amendments as follows: — (1) 'i'hat subject to the consent of the trustees a reduction of £250 should bo mado in the cost price of a parsonage site required by St. Mary's, Auckland, providing the balance be paid annually in instalments of £100. (2) That action be taken to obtain an alteration of tue law, so as to enable irustees of church lands to grant mining leases involving waste. The Committee declined to recommend that the Diocesan General Trust Board of Auckland be appointed trustees of the General Trust and Melaneaian Trust Estates. The following proviso was added to the second recom-mendati-<a i—Provided thab when land is leased for any purpose involving waste it be an instruction to the trustees to retain such portion of the annual proceeds as will be sufficient to ro-instate the capital value. ELECTION OF PRIMATE AND MISSIONARY BISHOPS. Tho Dean of Christchurch moved the second reading of the Bill to amend title A, canon 1, section 2 ("The Primate"), clauses 21 to 29; also section 3, "Missionary Bishops," clause 34. Tho motion for the second reading was agreed to on the voices. The Bill vva3 then considered in committee, and reported without material amendments. The Synod adjourned at half-past ten p.m.
