THE DUKE'S OF HAMILTON.
Writes the London correspondent of the Melbourne " Leader ";—" By the way, the Duko of Hamilton is retiring from the turf. The duke was very warm indeed as a young man and game for any mortal thing. Ha lost, I should say, more than any other aristocratic venturer on the turf. The Marquis of Hastings, you know, was really nob a loser at all on his betting. He speut such a lot of money. Others could be quoted, perhaps, who made themselves liable for more than Hamilton, bub between him and them is the great difference that the bulk of tho former school's losings were also the owings, while the French Scotch duko. paid up. So far as my experience goes, ho made the biggest bet on record, viz., „180,000 to £6,000 against Hermio for tho Derby that animal won. It was called off, however, owing to the intervention of Admiral Rous and, if I am not mistaken, the Duke of Beaufort. These spoke so very strongly about the deal to the duke and Captain Machcll, who took the wager, that under their influence they agreed to wipe the bet out afterwards. Machell charged Hamilton with concerned in tho old hand's action, a nasty slur, which resulted in the pair fighting an English duel. They repaired to the July course and had a longish go with the raw 'uns before bystanders interfered and stopped the set-to. The Duke of Hamilton has not really taken much interest in the turf for years, and though he kept a few horses in training, will not be missed, saved by Dick Marsh, hia trainer."
