MR. WALLACE'S STUD.
Mr Donald .Wallace appears to have dipped into the Musket blood to a good extent. In his stud he has Enfillade (Nordenfeldt's full brother), who is stated to have gotsomo splendid foals; the ex-Auckland sprinter A'litraiUGuse.whoseyearling by Mentor, the Melbourne Cup winner, is highly spoken of ; Fancy Free and Kariri both daughters of Musket, to say nothing of tho ex-ki_g of tho turf, Carbine. In reference to tho idol of tho public, a writer of the Melbourne " Sportsman," who looked . over liiru at Mr Wallace's stud farm at Bacchus Marsh, says:— "Carbine looked wonderfully bright and gay as his beautiful bay coat fairly shone in the sunlight. Ho is -so well known to everybody that description is superfluous, and ho lopped his ears forward and looked quite as phlegmatic as he did on tho racecourse. His great reachy neck ia making a crest, and his powerful shoulders, groat barrel, short back, and great hindquartei'3, his distinctive blaze, and white hind leg all make him as remarkable as ever. He seem 3to embody great equine power. I had a good look at the cause of his retirement—that leg—and there is a lot of thickening of the "periostium, just in front of the suspensory ligament of the off fore leg. 1 have seen horses stand for years that appeared to havo legs in an infinitely worse sbato, and ib looks as if two or three big dressings of Stevens' ointment would absolutely cause tho absorption of the trouble; but it is near a vory b:id place, namely, fho ligament." Carbine has been scratched for the Champion Stakes.
