ONEHUNGA SUMMER MEETING,

The Summer Meeting of the Onehunga Racing Club took place at the Otahuhu race-course on Saturday. Tho attendance was small. During the afternoon the sum of £1,4J6 was pessed through the totalisators by Mr Blomti.ld, the tickets being 10s on each race. Ida won the Onehunga Cup in an easy manner, never being headed from start to finish. This filly also proved successful in tho Flying Stakes, but in the Welter Handicap, the last event of the day, she wont down before Giaueus. Tbe Steeplechase was one of the most remarkable contested on any racecourse. Yardman, Tommy and Hopeful Kate baulked at the first obstacle, an awkward looking railing covered with furze, preceded by a 3ft open drain. The horses baulked repeatedly, but eventually Yardman and Hopeiul Kate were got over, but they again refused at a wall on the far side of tbe course, opposite the stand. Chance was got over tha jump, but when the railing and furze was again reached, he came down and threw Miller, his rider, who was stunned. E. Williams, the well-known jockey, was a by etander, and he mounted Chance and going ever the remainder of tho course came in first. Williams scaled 10st 61b, and the race ,v,is, therefore, awarded to Chance. Yardman was the only other horse to finish. The time for the race «was lQmin 42sec. Dividend, £1 14s. After the Selling Race there was a short battle tor the possession of Octopus between Mr Thompson and the trainer Writrht, but the horse waa eventually knocked down to Mr Thompson for £80, the Club thus netting £30. Mr Mark performed the secretarial duties with satisfaction, and Mr Halstead wielded the starter's flag.
