FIRE IN QUEEN-STREET.

What might have developed into a serious fire was fortunately discovered in timo to be suppressed last night. Mr Roland Firth, of Parnell, was near the Waverley Hotel shortly before ei-ht o'clock when he noticed a fire "in one of the bedrooms of the hotel. He immediately gave the alarm, when it was discovered that the curtains had taken fire. The early discovery resulted in the fire being extinguished bofore more than £5 worth of damage had been done. Tho Fire Brigade, under Superintendent Hughes, were very early on the spot, but their services were not required. It appears that Mr G. A. Edmonds, who occupied the room, had left a lighted' candle on the chest of drawers. He went out of the room for a few minutes, and no doubt tho wind wafted the curtains toward the flames. The licensee, Mr Allan, had an insurance of £1,200 on the stock and £250 on the furniture, both policies being held by the South British Office,
