NEW ZEALAND CHESS CONGRESS.

Last evening and fchia morning and afternoon play in the New Zealand Chess Congress was continued in the room of the Auckland Chesa Club, Robson's E.ooms. Play finished lasb night at 9 o'clock. In the afternoon, in the game Mr Hookham. againsb Mr Seideberg (Ocago), the latter gentleman won a well-contested encounter, first winning a pawn, and then with a powerful attack savinghisadvorsary'squeen for a rook and a bishop. The game of MiBake well against Mr Little John resulted in a draw. In Mr Jowitb v. Mr Malcolm, Mr Jowitb resigned at the 65th move, having exhausted 2k hours, while his opponent had taken up 1 hour 15 minutes. The game between Mr Trimble and Mr Ashton was abandoned at the 51sb move as drawn. To-day play was resumed at 10 a.m., the competitors being paired for the day as follows :—Aeliton v. Jowitt, Malcolm v. Trimbte, Hookham v. Barnes, Seideberg v. Bakewell. Mr Barnes arrived from tho South this afternoon. His game had been postponed for him. In the game between Mr Bakewell and Mr Seideborg, Mr Sii.leberg had the move, and Mr Bakewell adopted the French de ience. At J p.m., 18 moves bad been macie, and the positions were fairly even.
