V.M.C.A CONVERSAZIONE.
A most enjoyable social evening was held ab the V.M.C.A. lasb evening. The various rooms were decorated with (lags, and the large company which assembled appeared to enjoy themselves. One room was devoted to an exhibition of photographs, a feature being tho photos of Chili, South Africa, lent by Mr Kirker of the Soubh British. Messrs Hemns and Joaiah Martin also sent views, and there wore some of the islands. In another room a largo musical box- lent by Hoffmann and Co., attracted a large number of visitors. The committee of management were Messrs Kekwiek, J. A. Norrie, and A. Knight. A most successful concert was held in the Lecture Hall. Tho following programme waa well gono through : — Overture, "Eldorado," Ponsonby ladies' orchestra; song (.selected), Miss Burgess ; recitation, " The Character of Napoleon," Mr Potter ; song, "II Bacio," Miss Buddie: selection, "Clarine," Ponsonby ladies' orchestra; ■violin sol", "11 Trovatore," Miss E. Whitelaw (pupil of Mr S. Adams), encored : recitation. " Burial of Moses." Mr Hutchison ; song,. Mr Muskcr ; selection, "Intermezzo," Ponsonby ladies' orchestra: gymnastic display in gymnasium by Professor Carrol] o and' Messrs Russell ana Lonergan. Little .Miss Whi tola w plays the violin with exceptional clovcrnoss, her execution being wonderful and her expression all that could be expected from one so young. The Ponsonby ladies' orchestra playod some items. The time was somewhat_ odd, and the conductor mighb have been in Khamscatska, for ail the use ho wa.. Why iadies, orchestra, by the way ? There are a good many males, un.oas indeed ladies were r_3guiscd in beards and trousers. In the- gymnasium Professor Carrollo, assisted by Messrs W. Russell and Lonergan, gave a lino exhibition on the 3 bars. .During the evening Mr J. L. Wilson presented certificates won at the recent musical and literary competition : —Miss E. H. McKerras, Messrs 'it. 11. A.Potter, D. S. Hutchinson, C. J. Parr, F. M. Hay, L. Kckwick. M. Aldis, S. C, Johnson, W. H. Carter, W. Muskcr, D. E. Walton, A. T. Twentyrnan, A. C. Jarrett, and tho St. James's and Tabernacle Literary Associations. The refreshment room, managed by the ladies, actively supervised by Messrs MacCauley and J. Bell, was well patronised. Several Well-known divines wero present.
