FIRES.

The dwelling of W. O'Brien, brickmaker, Timaru, was destroyed by fire on September 21. Nothing was saved. It was insured for £200 in the Standard and £175 in the Victoria.

A fire occurred ab Lichfield on the night of Sept. 29th, which resulted in the destruction of the hotel of Mr Alexander Heaney. The building was a two-storied one, and was insured for £500 in the South British.

Henry Brown's grocery store, Colombostreet North, Christchurch, was totally destroyed by fire on September 20th. There was an insurance of £100 on the building in favour of the Permanent Buildinp - Socieby, and on the stock and effects for £300 in the Standard office.

J.v Keyter Bros.' hardware establishment ab Whangarei caught fire on the night of October lsb. Mosb of tho stock waa desbroyed. The building was saved. The sbock waa insured for £200 in the Commercial Union, and £150 in bhe Norwich Union. The former office has also an insurance of £50 on bhe building.

A fire occurred on September 26bh at Bombay, which resulted in the total destruction of a six-roomed dwelling house, the property of Mr Edward Fahey. The origin of the fire is supposed to have been accidental. Mr Fahey did nob succeed in saving anybhing. The house and furniture were insured for £200 in the North British office.

A building at Ross, owned and occupied by Mr Travers, was destroyed by firo on October 2nd. Ib was formerly used as an hotel, bub the licensee allowed the license to lapse in June. The only occupant in the building at the time states that he got up to make coffee. The lamp burst, and he could nob extinguish the flames. The building was insured for £200 and the furniture for £100 in the South British.

A fire occuiTed on bhe nighb of Sepbember 23 in a bwo-stallod wooden stable and loft in Graham-street, owned by Mr E. D. Halstead, veterinary surgeon. The fire was first discovered by T. Brennan, gum-sorter, living close by, who gave the alarm. Mrs Halstead ab once telephoned to the Fire Brigade Station, and soon after the arrival of Superintendent Hughes and his men tho fire was pub out. Mr Halstead estimates his loss ab aboub £30, as the stable and contents were not insured.

A very destructive fire broke out ab Palmerston North on September 12th, by which the following places were burnt:— Pegden's shop and dwelling, Ireland and Co.'s grocery shop and washhouse, George's drapery shop and dwelling, Hodgson's tinsmith's shop and dwelling, Wilson's Occidental Hotel. Besides these, Crump's lawyer's office and Moreland's furniture shop were badly burnt. The occupants of the buildings escaped in their nightdresses. The insurances so far as known are :—Pegden's : £330 on stock and furniture in the National;. £600 on the building in the New Zealand. The estimated loss is £2,000. Ireland and Cos. shop : £500 on stock and £400 on building in the Union ; £250 on the stock in the Royal; £500 on the stock in the Imperial: £800 on the stock in bhe Phcenix. Loss, £600. George's shop and dwelling : £400 in the Union, £400 in the New Zealand. The loss is £600. Hodgson's shop and dwelling: £225 in the National; stock uninsured. Occidental: £500 in the Phcenix, £500 in tbe Imperial, £250 in the Victoria. Loss £600. The total is estimated at £12,000.
