THE TENNIS SEASON.

MOUNT EDEN CLUB MEETING,

There was a good attendance of members of the Mount Eden and Epsom Tennis Lawn at Waite's,Hall last evening. Both Indies and gentlemen were gathered in force. The chair was occupied by Mr A. Heather. The secretary read the annual report, which stated that the progress of the Club had been rapid and substantial. The total membership of the Club is G3, composed of 32 ladies and 36 gentlemen, and of this membership 11 aro new, having joined last season. The playing season was opened on the 15th November, a later date than usual, whioli was unavoidable, owing to the extremely unsettled weather. The opening day was a decided success, between 200 and 300 people visiting the lawn. Many of the Club's players, both ladies and gentlemen, competed at Association fixtures with success. The Club congratulate themselves io possessing the present gentleman champion, Mr Morrison ; while Miss Spiera, the club champion, furnished the runner-up for the ladies' championship, meeting Miss Mowbray, the hitherto unbeaten champion, in the final struggle for the pride of place. This match was one of the best in point of merit of play and closeness of finish of all the Association conteats. The Club now holds the position of premier club in Auckland, having f»on all the events but one from Parnoll, which has hitherto held almost an unbroken record.

The results of the various matches are as follows:—

Messrs Patterson and Sullivan, representatives of the Ponsonby Club, were met in a friendly contest by Messrs Carr and Macfarlane, when our representatives achieved an easy victory. A most interesting match between Mrs Chapman and Miss Gorrie, representing tho University Club, and Misses Spiers and Paton, our representatives, was played' at the University Club-ground near the close of the season, when tho latter suffered an honourable defeat. We were enabled, owing to the presence of Miss Hitchings (of Napier) in Auckland last summer, to match our lady champion, Miss Spiers, against an ex-champion of the colony. Wβ were unable on that occasion to gain a victory, but have sanguine hopes of boing able to furnish in Miss Spiers a future lady champion." The balance-sheet as submitted ehowed the Club to be in a healthy condition, the debit balance being a small one ac compared with the amount of work done for the past three years since the inauguration of the Club. The lawns are now about the best in Auckland. During the season the ladies provided tea, which was also acknowledged in the report, which was carried. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year :—President, Mr Arthur Heather ; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Batger and E. Mahony, jun.; committee, Misses Spiers, J. Paton and Hall, and Messrs Hudson, Carr and Paton ; secretary and treat urer, Air H. T. Maclean ; delegates to the Association, Messrs Paton and Maclean ; auditor, Mr B. J. Esam. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
