TAX ON TOTALISATORS.
Erom what h&a taken place among our law - makers at Wellington during the week, there is good reason to think fclie totalistf.tor will nob escape this session without a tax boing imposed on all moneys parsed throng!) the instrument. The Hon. Mrßallance, in his Financial Statement submitted to the House of Representatives on Tuesday night, stated that it was proposed to make the tax 2J per cent., which I presume will come out of the 10 per cent, deducted from each £1 by the Racing Clubs. In reply to a question in the Upper House yesterday, the Hon. Mr Buckley said that the Government had no intention of introducing a Bill to amend the Gaming and lotteries Act, but would bring down a measure with the view to tax totalisators. TJiis means, so far as sweeps and consultations are concerned, the Government do mot intend to move in legalising this form <of gambling, bub it will be"open for a private member to move in the if he eheo^es.
