AUDITING ORPHAN HOME ACCOUNTS.'
THE CHAMPION. COW OF THE WORLD. .
(To bbc Editor.)
Sir,—Prior to bho advenb of Mr Churton's lebter in your columns, I was under the impression that the duties of the auditors herein were more onerous, and bhab a sum of £2 2s for each quarter's investigation was far too little for tho service. Bub as this genbleman has traversed the dark conbinonb and discovered its darker feabures and landmarks, his opinion cerbainly oughb bo carry weighb. The revelabions from bhis terra incognita demonstrate mosb clearly thab bhe work of bho auditors is bobh simple and small, and a fortiori oughb, bherefore, to havo been bhoroughly and efficiently carried out. Had bhis been bhe case, we should nob (awesbruck) now be gazing on bhe colossal Rawlings Sovereign Pyramid, I.SOO feeb high, cosb 20s per foob. We are bold ouly bhe base is wreathed in blackness and thundercloud, and thab bbc summit is babhed in serene sunlighb.
Mr Babger says he has done his duby; Bishop Cowie joins in bhis issue ; and I presume outside bhis charmed circle no one shares this opinion ; and it is pleasing to reflect thab for tho audibors there is neither qualm of conscience, piercing through wibh many sorrows haunted chambersof memory, nighb-mare of neglecb, nor horror ab bhe ghasbly peculations, which bub for their laches might have been prevented. If, however, as alleged, bhe auditors did bheir duby, wo musb admib Rawlings did works of super-erogation.
" While men sleep bhe enemy sows bares." While secretary and committee were hushed to sleep under tho gentle influence of ansesthetice, bhe only man wide awake was Rawlings, " Mark " by name, making his mark so deep and frightful thab one would have bhoughb, if bhe breasurer and commibtee were certainly in a state of coma, the auditors would nob have been so far hypnotised as to be oblivious of bhis giganbic fraud. Tha old Orphan cow is bhe mosb remarkable animal in creation. I have known her more than a quarter of a century ; she has been systematically milked the whole time, and has never gone dry. A few years ago she was so attenuated thab I feared dissolution imminent. She was thereafter providentially placed in the Costley meadow (thanks to Mr S. Jackson); she then picked up a hurricane, and is the largest milk producer in the world. Rawlings, inter alia, always had his hands on the teats (of course none of the officers saw him); bub, what is worse, he actually carried the bag, emptying ib of its pactoiean fluid. We oughb nob bo cry over spilb milk ; on the obher hand, bhe breasurer and audibors should forthwith he compelled to restore the fluid, and in doing this bhe public are nob asking a favour, bub simply demanding a righb.—l am, ebc, John Abbott. St. George's Bay Road, Parnell, 22nd April, 1891.
