WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.
(by telegraph.—press association.)
Christchurch, this day. A DEPUTATION from the unemployed waited upon Air Seddon and asked for relief work until the land settlements schemes were in force. The Aliniater expressad himself very strongly against the pca-.tice of providing relief works and said he would not admit the principle that the Govenij ment were bound to find work except, such as would be reproductive. He was particularly severe upon a member of the deputation who complained of having to walk 50 miies to rel'of works at Bealey, on tho West Coasb road, and said that instead of paying men 4s od per day, the work would be let in small sections to men who would form there own gangs. The price would be such that they could make ordinary wages, and the profit would go to the men" He said there was work for 100 men for three months at bhe Bealoy.
