JUMPED INTO THE HARBOUR,
The groups of wharf loungers and other* gathered near the men-o'-war steps on the Queen-street Wharf about 1.30 this afternoon, watching the arrival and departure of boats' crews belonging to the warships in port, were provided with a rather sensational scene. An old man was seen to take oil' his hat, place it on the wharf, and then deliberately jump over tho side of the tee into the harbour.
A steam launch belonging to H.M.S. Rapid happened to be lying alongside the steps at tho time, and the occurrence being noticed by her occupants the old fellow was quickly picked up and gob on the wharf again. His name was found to be Nicholas Power. He had been employed in several Auckland kauri gum stores for some time past.
As it was seen that the man was suffering from the effects of severe drinking he was arrested by water-police Constable McDonald on a charge of drunkenness and lodged in the lock-up.
