SHEFFIELD HANDICAP.
To-morrow at Potter's Paddock, Epsom, there will be run off the big Sheffield Handicap of which there has been so much talk in athletic circles of late. The prize money for the event amounts to £75, of which £60 goes to the first man. There were 37 entries of professional runners from all parts of the colony for the race, and of these 30 have accepted. There should therefore be a series of very keen struggles. The event will be decided in heats of about four men in each heat. Brady (Thames), McKinnon (Waikato), McManua (Helensville), Linden (Pickering), Roberts (ex-amateur), McDonald, Bailey, Howie, and McKean appear to bo most fancied for the race. McKean, if the reports of his training performances are correct, should go very close to winning, while Roberts, McKinnon, and Linden must all be close up. Some of tho outsiders may, however, spring a surprise, as, for instance, White or Allsop, bub the best men are the tried men. In addition to the big race there are two fire brigade competitions, for which large entries have been received, and for which the competition should be close.
Mr D. G. McDonnell, Kapai Goldmining Company, received a telegram to-day stating that the two feet prospects are improving north, and they are starting to save quartz.
