A COMPLIMENT TO AUCKLAND.
Writes "Mazeppa:"—"The circumstance of Mr D. O'Brien having sent Tasman and three mares to Auckland, there to propagate recruits for his use, and for the marksb also I suppose, is somewhat significant. We have got into the habib of looking on Dan as a particularly clever as well as a singularly lucky man in all matters pertaining to the turf, and, this being so, it is a serious omen that he has deliberately abandoned the Canterbury district a3 a breeding-place in favour of the warmer climate of Auckland. For my part, I am not surprised. To use a vulgarism which will be well understood, 'there are points in it.' The natural habitat of the horse is, as all know, a balmier country than that of the South Island of New Zealand, and, though the thoroughbred has been I waa going to say invented in England, it seems to come to perfection much easier in Australia. And nob only much easier, but in a warmjclimate the race comes much earlier. That is a great advantage. Auckland foals are due early in September ; we in Obago do not expect them aa a rule until November. See what a difference that makes to a two-year-old in the spring. It seems to me that Mr O'Brien's departure in this respect is beyond the range of experiment, and as time rolls on I shall expect to sea other breeders following his lead. If so, we must take it in good part. Ib is good for the colony at large, and therefore for us in the South, that every possible point should be taken advantage of in order to bring our stock bo perfection."
