WHANGAREI COALFIELDS.
APPLICATIONS FOR NEW LEASES,
In view of the improved prospects of coalmining at Whangarei several applications have been made to the Hon. Mr Mitchelaon for permission to mine for coal on Crown lands outside of the area at preient being worked. Mr Mitchelson in reply to every request of this character has replied thab the Government deem it inadvisable to grant any further coalmining leases until the whole question has been considered. This course has been adopted with a view to taking every'possible precaution to prevent anything in the form of monopoly of coal, and in every future cajje where application is made for the lease of coal-bearing land from the Crown, strict inquiry will be made with a view to conservation of the public interests. - .
