POLICE COURT.-THIS DAY.

Ewingbon, Justices.) Drunkenness. —One first offender was fined ss, or in default, 24 hours' hard labour.
Rogue and Vagabond.— George Stephens was charged under bhe Police Offences Acb wibh being a rogue and vagabond, and having no lawful visible means of support. —Prisoner pleaded not guilty.—Evidence was given by Detective Hughes to the effect bhab the accused lived on bhe illicit earnings of dissolute females.—Elizabeth Dismore gave corroborabive evidence. Tho Bench sentenced tho prisoner bo three months' imprisonmenb wibh hard labour. — Harriet Davison, for having no lawful visible means of supporb, was sentenced bo three monbhs' imprisonmenb with hard labour.—Margsrob Barsbow, for a similar offence, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonmenb wibh hard labour, bhe Bench remarking thab she had a very bad record.
Stealing a Hat.—Frederick Lyttle was charged with having sbolen a hab, value 10s 6d, belonging to William Turner.— Prisoner said he would like to make an explanation ond plead guilty. This wa3 entered at. a plea of nob guilty.— William Turner deposed thab the hat was stolen from his house.—Mrs Sarah Turner gave corroborative evidence.—Mr MrLaren deposed thab he wenb to his brother-in-law's house in company with the prisoner. Upon finding no one at home they wont to the hotel. Aftorwarda he saw prisoner coming from the houso wearing the hat.—Accused said that he and the prosecutor's brother were miners ab bhe Thames. They came to Auckland and had been drinking togebher. He had no knowledge of the affair. He was willing bo pay for bhe hab.—The Bench fined prisoner Is and cosbs, also to pay for hab, or in defaulb seven days' hard labour.
