EMPLOYMENT OP FEMALES.
Some discussion took place in the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon on the motion for tho second reading of the Em©lovment of Females and Others Amendment Act. Tbe object of this measure is to amend the existing Acb with a view to alter the statutory half-holiday from Saturday to-such' other, day .as may be most convenient to "employers of labour and employees in different districts, and also to make the half-holiday commence at 1 p.m. Instead of 2 p.m. as at present. Hon. Me-ra Wilson and Stevens spoke in support of tbe motion, bub Dr. Pollen objected to the Bill on the ground that it proposed to take away ano.her^ hour from the employer.' He also urged that the fciil left it open for workpeople Cd say whether "the, women" not take their half-holiday on the Monday, « the s ir\e n on the Tuesday, and "the chillier) " under the Act, on Wednesday. He e_pro"scd the hope that this Bill would be laid aside until the other Labour Bills were before the Council.
The debate was eventually adjourned for further consideration on Tuesday next.
