THE SEAMEN'S UNION.
DECISION OF THE SHIPOWNERS. Sydney, July 24. At a meeting of the steamship owners to-day, it was resolved " That owing to the widespread commercial depression and consequent lose to shipowners, they cannot accept all the seamen's new rules and grant a further increase of pay, though they are still willing Xo continue running their vessels upon the present recognised rules and rates of wages with the various Mercantile Unions; bub, should these bodies decline to continue service under the rules, the Owners' Association will be compelled to lay up their veeeele. The owners subsequently met delegates from the Seamen's Union, and stated they were willing to resume the adjourned Conference provided the foregoing decision was accepted as a basis. A number of minor concessions On both sides Were agreed to, but the questions of hours of labour and overtime remains unsettled. On these questions both sides are firm, and the Conference adjourned till Saturday, when the owners will give their final deaision.
