CITY COUNCIL.
The City Council met lasb evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. H. Upton), Crs. Davieß, Warren, Trenwith, Farrell, Lennox, Crowfche'r, Holland, Sinitfe, Dignan, Cooper, Swales, Wright, Heweon, Patereon and Grey. Bukgkss Roll. — An application from Ma*y Vaughan to have her name placed on the East Ward Burgess Roll was referred to the Legal Committee. City Market.—Buddie and Co., lesseeeof the City Market, ask that a urinal shall be erected in the yard to prevent nuisance. They also state that gravel is much-needed for the yard, and the down spouting requires attention. The City Engineer reports favourably on the first item, but states that the others have been attended to.—Referred to Streets Committee. Signboard.—Tbos. Cook' and Sou request permission to lower their signboard in Queen-street. —Declined. Rent Reduction Required.—Mrs Mafgb. Schlinker wrote asking that the rent of her property in Albeit street, leased from the City Council, be reduced from £30 to £10 per annum, or she will "be obliged to relinquish her lease.—Declined. , Permission for Tram.— J. A. Pond and Co., under date July 23rd, request permission to lay a short tram to connect their new mill in Cust6in»-stre§t West with tire allotment opposite.—Granted. Fencing Jack request the Council to bear their share of fencing between their property and that of the writers.—The request tfae granted. Accounts.—The accounts as audited by the Finance Committee were passed for payment. , Ri*AiNiNG VVALt. — Thai olloMng tetidfers were received for the erection of a retaining wall in Upper Piit-street :—Catran and Bennett* £64 ; E. Murphy* £95 ss; B, Berry, £86 Is; M. McSafrfiefcyj 6s Sd ; Hill and Co., £77 12a; Bowekill atfa another, £77125. The first wae accepted. The Engineer's estimate was £73. It was decided to charge the cost to ward allocation and to employ ho 'special clerk of works. Ponsonby Street Levels. —There was no objection to the levels of London, Dublin, and Hamilton streets as fixed on the Yecommendafeton of the Engineer.—lt was decided that levels be fixed.— There were objections to the proposed levels of St. Francis "dp Sales and Duriedin streets, and the objections were referred, to the ward members to confer with the objectors in conjunction .with obe Streets Committee.—Mr. Bartley appeared in support of "ah objection to fche proposed levels of liawrence-street.—This 'objection was treated as the others. Steeets Committe*!.'—This Committee made the following recommendation's :—(1) from Devore and Cooper re lighting of .urinal, Theatre Lane, Victoria-street, atidletter from T. 11.
