SINGULAR STORY.
THE CHARRED STEED.
LORD ONSLOW'S HORSE AT LARGE,
It will be remembered that some months ago when His Excellency Lord Onslow and parby were on their way to Waikato to visib the Waitomo Caves, the sbraw in the horse box caught fire, wibh the resulb thab one of the Governor's horses was severely burned. The horse galloped away, bub was brought back again and oil placed on its wounds. As no hopes were entertained of the animal's recovery, ib was placed in the charge of Mr Ellis, of Ofcorohanga, with instructions to havo ib destroyed. The horse was given by Mr Ellis to a man named Alexander Bray to shoot. He afterwards claimed his fee and was paid 10s for his trouble. Recently certain facts came to the knowledge of the police .authorities, .and Debecbive Horberb was despatched to the King Counbry to make inquiries. He learned tha. the horse had nob been destroyed, and __ idence of thab facb ib was ultimabely found amongsb a lot of wild horseß at Mangarama, near Tanehopuowai right in the heart of the King Country. Tho horse was secured and so was Mr Bray. The latter was charged ab the nearest Police Court with having obtained money by false pretences, but the justices dismissed the case. Herberb reburned to town this morning with Lord Onslow's horse, which is now in the paddock at the rear of Governmenb House.
