POLICE COURT—THIS DAY.

Drunkenness. — Ono first offender wa 9 fined ss, or in default 24 hours' hard labour. Richard Cahill for a similar offence was fined 40s, or seven days' in default.

Alleged Assault. — Robert Henry Sayers was charged with having assaulted Annie Cobbebb on the 22nd of July.—Defendant pleaded not guilty.—Mrs Cobbett was called, bub said she did not wish to press the charge. As the man had been arrested she was compelled to make her statement, which was to the effect that defendant had struck her on the head with a candlestick. —Annie Farrell, daughter of last witness, deposed that the prisoner first knocked her down and then struck her mother with the candlestick. —Beanie Home also deposed to having witnessed tho assault. —Constable Clark deposed bo having been called bo Mrs Cobbebb's house. She was bleeding and he took prisoner into custody. The man refused to leave the house until ho got his hab and ring. The prisoner was sworn, and deposed that he wenttoMrsCobbett's house and wenb inside. Some time after he asked for a ring that had been taken off his finger. A row ensued, and the three women set on to him. Crockery was pitched ab him, and he was compelled to fly upstairs to save himself. He got into the bedroom and stopped there till the constable arrived.—Dr. Giles said it appeared to have been a drunken row, but as those injuries were serious, such assaults could not be passed over. He would therefore give prisoner the option of a fine of 40s, or 14 days' hard labour in default.
