SAMOA.

(from odr own correspondent.)

Apia, July 14. The danger of disturbance amongsb the natives still continues. The latest development is the endeavour which is being made by one of the most powerful of the Savaii chiefs (Pau) to induce the Tamasese party to join with Mabaafa in an endeavour to overthrow Malietca. This Pau, until a few weeks ago, was one of Malietoa's staunchesc adherents, bub aboub thab time he was visited by Mabaafa, who was accompanied by some of the agitators who for so long have beencausing trouble here, and his defection dates from that time. Although I feel sure bhat this attempt to create a rebellion will prove abortive, yet it tends to show the necessity for the powers to hasten their arrangements for the fennation of a proper government, so bhat these agitators, who unfortunately have no consul through whom they can be reached, may be promptly and effectually dealt with.

The natives are busy making copra, of which, however, the output this year will be less than usual.

The London Mission Society have commenced the issue of a monthly periodical printed in the Samoan language for the beaehb of native readers. It is edited, lam informed, by the Rev. A. E. Claxbon, and will, I am sure, supply a great wanb amongst the Samoans.

The TXS.s. Mohican is still here, being the only man-'o-war ab present in Samoan waters. The Sperber is expected, and ib is rumoured that bhe Rapid and Egeria are coming here.

The Ringhorn and Fernando, both Norwegian, vessels, are the only ships here ab present. is loading copra for Europe, and the latter is going to New Hebrides with return labour.
