BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Board of Education was held this afternoon. Present: Messrs Udy (Chairman), J_uke, Lennox, Carr, Upton, and Cooper. Chairman's Report.— The reporb of the chairman on the business done during the week was read and adopted. MiHarrow's complaint about the Lake Committee election has been referred to tbe Committee. The holidays at Otahuhu have been extended a week, as a IBO ab Russell, the latter owing to epidemic. The resignations of Misses M. E. Kissling, M. E. Edwards, and S. Gilford, and Mr H. J. Durham, have been received. Miss C. B. Westwood has received a fortnight's leave of absence, and Mr J. Lamonb a month. Other matters of detail have been arranged. Ohineroa.— Application from Committee that the school shall be kept open for anobher quarter.—Granted, and teacher to get notice accordingly. Wayby and Wellsford.—Committees objection to these schools being made halftime was again brought up.—Received. Kirikiri (Thames).— The matter of obtaining a school building for this place was again discussed. The inspectors recommend thab the Board acquire the Native School property. Telegrams from Wellington stato that the Government is negotiating with the natives. —Deferred. Paparata.—Application for addition to school refused. , _ , ' , Repairs, Etc.—Fairburn s Road, school bell granted; Newton East, application for division of class room referred to inspector ; Nawton West, eight loads of scoria eranted ; Okaihau, school bell granted. They also want several other thingsdesks, picture cards, fireguards, etc.—All granted but fireguard. Otahuhu: Tank wanted,—Referred to Mr Allwnght. Pakuranga: Repairs to verandah.—Granted. Position of Teachers. — Panmure: Repapering of dwelling-house asked for.— Paper to be supplied, and teacher to do the work. Mr Cooper pointed oub tho unfair- ! S c ne of asfcing teachers in old houses t0 "pay the cost of repairs, while teachers i - o ing into new houses had nothing to pay. Mr Upton said thab on Mr Udy's motion the Board had only affirmed a principle; bub each case was to be considered oh its merits. Mr Cooper said ibwas clear the right course was to charge the teachers a rent; and bhe Chairman pointed out thab he had already advocated that course.
