• _* — "LA MASCOTTE" ABANDONED. For some little time past ib has been known thab the Amabeur Opera Club was in bwo minds aboub the playing of the comic opera ,l La Mascotte." The piece has been in rehearsal for some time ; but every day the difficulties in the way of its production have become clearer and more clear to bhe authorities of the Club. At lasb ib has been definitely decided nob bo produce the opera. A meeting of the Club was held lasb night in the Choral Hall, and the secretary announced to the members bhab the Committee had decided bo withdraw "La Mascobbe " and substitute M Th. BdrcSrer;" They bhoughbbbe former hardly Suitable for amateurs, and unless ib was mounted and dressed as shown by the professional company playing ib ab the Optra House, ib would nob be " Mascobbe," and consequently bhey decided nob bo go on Wibh ib. The announcement seemed to give general satisfaction, and there can be no doubt thab the Committee and.Club have taken bhe right course in the wibhdrawal, although opinion Is divided respecting the substitution made. The first rehearsal of "The Sorcerer" will take place next Thursday evening. • ' Some expenses have of Course been incurred already in connection with "La Mascotte," but they are not very heavy, and a small present loss is considered better bhan a prospectively large future one.
