NOTES FROM WHANGAREI.
On Wednesday, the 27th of November, Mr P. Sburb Brown was elected Chairman of the Whangarei County Council for the year, and Messrs P. S. Brown, Joseph Mullabond and John M. McKay were appointed to represent the county on the North Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board during the year.
At the ordinary meeting of the County Council held afterwards, accounts were passed for payment amounting to £223 143, and tenders were received for works on a new road between Whangarei and Mangapai, Mr A. P. Campbell, of Waipu, being the successful tenderer for the bridges, at £155, and John C. Miller for tho earth works, at £95 15s.
Other tenders were received for works at Waiapu and elsewhere, some being so high that the Council did not accept of them.
New Departure.—Tho Chairman (Mr Brown) stated at the conclusion of the business thafc a number of native chiefs wished to have a conference with tho Council on bhe subjects that interest and affect both races, referring to taxation, roads, fencing, cattle trespass, and a variety of other topics. The Councillors expressed themsolves as quite agreeable, and that a day should be appointed early in bhe year, probably after the January meeting. Somo of the Councillors thought thab ib was a sign of progress to hear of them expressing such a wish.
