FRIGHTFUL ACCIDENT.

FOUR MEN DASHED TO PIECES.

On the 21st ulb. a frightful accident occurred ab the South Burwood Coal Company's sinking pit, situated near the Red Head Lagoon, about 10 miles from Newcasble. Three men wore engaged in sinking operations, named Edward King, Patrick Ryan and Augustus White, together with an Overseer, John Whitehead. They had gob into tho cage or bucket at the bottom of the shaft and given the engine-man on the top the necessary signal to haul them to the surface. The winding-engine was started and the four men were being brought up fche shaft. The engine-man, however, failed to stop fche winding-engine in time, and the cage or bucket was brought with terrific force against fche poppet heads and pulley-wheel erected over the mouth- of the shaft, wibh the result that the hauling rope broke and the cage, with its occupants, was dashed down the shaft a distance of over4oofb., fche four men being liberally smashed to pieces. Medical assistance was obtained as speedily as possible, bub without avail. The four men presenfced a horrible spectacles Deabh in each instance musb have resulted instanbaneously.
