MOUNT EDEN ROAD BOARD TAXATION.

Sib, — With your permission I will reply to Mr Harper's letter, which appeared in your iesue of the 7th met. Mr Harper insinuates that tho values have been added to in the rate roll. For hia satisfaction, and others also, allow me to state that the rate rolls in use are signed by the Chairman and members of the Board after examination and being found correct. As to the valuation roll compiled by the Property Tax Department for the three years commencing on April Ist, 1889, it has been so repeatedly advertised that the Board have adopted this valuation, that I think no owner of property in the district should be unaware of their decision or of the effect of it to ratepayers. In the Valuation 8,011, Mr Harper's name occurs as the owner of lots 8 aud 9, "View Point, and the value set against these lots in the roll is most certainly £730, and on that assessment Mr Harper will have to pay his rates ; inasmuch as it is provided by the Rating Act, 1882, part of section' 7, "That the value fixed opposite each rateable property on such roll shall be for all rateable purposes the rateable value for the purpose of this Act."

The Board have to administer local rating under the Acbs passed for that purpose, and though it may seem, to press heavily on some, the ratepayers know thab what is done is done fairly and honestly. The best evidence I can adduce that Mr Harper's suspicions are not general in Mount Eden, is the fact that nob a siDgle ratepayer has called &t the office (to my knowledge) to verify hiyassessmenb, though many have called to pay their rates during the week that has elapsed.—l am, etc.,
