I v.! DISCUSSION AT NEWTON > r BOROUGH COUNCIL.
'At the meeting of the Newton Borough ' Council last night, the Mayor.said he was sure that they all ■ regretted the sad accident which had occurred last Saturday. They all sympathised deeply, with the bereaved parents, and he was glad that the ''Councillors and others present had been kind enough to defray the expenses of the funeral. He was also glad that at tho inquest it had been decided that no ono was •to blame. He thought that the least they could do was to pass a vote of condolence with the bereaved parents. He would therefore move,'' That a letter of sympathy be sent from the Council to'the parents who have been bereaved." v • Cr. Riggs seconded the motion, and also expressed pleasure that the jury exonerated everybody from blame. With regard to defraying the expenses, he might state that he with others agreed to see that the funeral expenses were paid.. He saw the undertaker and arranged the matter, and "the church with which the lad's parents were connected had also assisted." Any gentleman present who wished to assist might hand in their subscriptions. : He ■ attended the inquest to give evidence, but the jury were perfectly satisfied that , no blame was attributable to anyone, so he Was not called. The father of the boy had also come to him and said that after , hearing tho evidence be was perfectly satisfied that no one was at fault. -The Councillors of the Borough of Newton "Subscribed £6 103 last night towards.de- ; .fraying the funeral expenses of the unfortunate little fellow. Cr. Riggs I took the money, and to-day paid the Undertaker and banded Over the balance
,: to the bereaved parents. The members of . ,; -Hw Newton Fire Brigade also intend to
raise a subscription at their next Thursday practice. The utmost sympathy is felt in the district for Mr and Mrs Davis in their sad bereavement.
